Todd L. Pittinsky is a Professor in Stony Brook University’s Department of Technology & Society, and the Faculty Director of its Undergraduate College of Leadership and Service. Before that, he was on the faculty of Harvard University, as an Associate Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. He was also Research Director of the Harvard Center for Public Leadership (CPL), where he was principal investigator of the multi-year National Leadership Index—a collaborative project with U.S. News and World Report—and led the taskforce which developed the Harvard CPL Leadership Development Model. Later, he served on the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His books include Us Plus Them (Harvard Business Press), Working Fathers (Addison Wesley), Crossing the Divide (Harvard Business Press), and Restoring Trust in Organizations and Leaders (Oxford University Press). Pittinsky’s research program has been profiled in The Economist and the Boston Globe and cited in Science, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal and on National Public Radio. He has published in leading academic journals and also enjoys writing for general audiences. He has authored or co-authored opinion pieces for The Atlantic, the Boston Herald, the Christian Science Monitor, the New York Times, Phi Delta Kappan and Science. Pittinsky has worked professionally in organizational and leadership development roles at KPMG Peat Marwick Management Consultants, Netscape Communications Corporation (now AOL), and Loudcloud (now Opsware) and has served as a consultant to organizations large and small, including Catalyst, General Motors, the World Bank, the National Nuclear Security Administration, and Bright Horizons. In 2004, he launched the Allophilia Project (www.allophilia.org) to better understand and communicate the fact that people are not limited to either prejudice or tolerance toward groups other than their own but can have very positive attitudes toward them. Pittinsky received his BA from Yale and his PhD jointly from Harvard Graduate School and Harvard Business School.
